January 2023 | Highpaw stories

Winter holidays are the best and are a chance to start the year in style by booking a perfect skiing trip. That means a lot fun for the whole family. Yes, dogs included! You no longer have to leave your pet at home during one of the best weeks of the year as you arrange accommodation for your next winter trip. Nowadays, a lot of extraordinary ski resorts across Europe welcome your four-legged friends. We bring you our selection below.

St. Moritz, Switzerland

It is no coincidence that St. Moritz is one of the best ski resorts in the world, due to its luxury, beauty, image and, most importantly, fantastic ski slopes that everybody loves. St. Moritz is a small town in Switzerland in the canton of Graubünden, on the border with Italy, and is the center of the Engadin region, which consists of several ski resorts. It is home to one of the most exclusive and luxurious ski resorts in the world, with the best restaurants, nice hotels, and great ski runs. The best thing is that you can take your dog with you! Kulm Hotel St. Moritz, Grand Hotel Kronenhof and Hotel Waldhaus are just some of the dog-friendly hotels.

Val Thorens, France

Val Thorens is a ski town in the Tarentaise valley in the French Alps at an altitude of 2300 m. It is located in the municipality of Saint-Martin-de-Belleville in the department of Savoie. The resort is part of the Les Trois Vallées ski area which, with more than 600 km of slopes, is one of the largest connected ski areas in the world. In the heart of the Val Thorens, you may find the Résidence Le Hameau du Kashmir - lodging perfect for families with children that is also a favorite among dedicated skiers due to the long ski runs and modern chairlifts of Val Thorens. The modern and cozy apartments can be rented for the whole family, pets included!

Nassfeld, Austria

Ski resort Nassfeld, whose full name is Skiarena Nassfeld Hermagor, is located near the town of Hermagor in the province of Carinthia, right next to the border with Italy. More precisely, one part of the ski resort is located within the territory of Italy. The Nassfeld ski resort is not only the largest and most modern in Carinthia, but also one of the ten best in Austria. Also, dogs are very welcome! There are more than 100 accommodation options in the region that have specialized in the needs and wishes of dogs and their owners. Not only that you will get a water bowl in the room, a dog blanket, and a dog-waste bag dispenser for when you go on walkies, but you can also count on a full-service package including vets, dog groomers and pet stores nearby. Hotel Wulfenia, Historischer Bauernhof Schabus and Falkensteiner Hotel & Spa Carinzia are just some of them.

Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy

Many people believe that Cortina d'Ampezzo is the best Italian ski resort, offering some of the most challenging slopes with beautiful panoramas, a large outdoor ice rink in the center, and a James Bond ski resort. It is also considered a real paradise because of the snow-capped peaks of the Dolomites, which leave you breathless with their unique shapes and natural beauty. For example, this 5-star Hotel Fanes  is a great choice because it offers amazing and comfortable rooms with views of the Dolomites, that you can enjoy in the company of your beloved pet. And if you are searching for something in the heart of Cortina, HOTEL de LEN will for sure make you happy.

Zermatt, Switzerland

Zermatt is a municipality in the district of Visp in the German-speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland. The city is located at the southern end of the Mattertal valley at an altitude of 1620 m, at the foot of Switzerland's highest peaks. It is known as a mountain and ski resort in the Swiss Alps. Zermatt is a "car-free" zone, and only electric vehicles are allowed. All accommodation units, be they apartments or hotels, are of exceptional quality regardless of categorization. However, we would definitely suggest a 5-star Mont Cervin Palace which was opened in 1851, and is a member of the 'Leading Hotels of the World'. It is located in the heart of Zermatt, and has a beautiful interior and a great offer. Even your dog will get its own bowl and basket!

Kranjska Gora, Slovenia

Located in northwestern Slovenia and surrounded by the majestic Julian Alps, Kranjska Gora Ski Resort is recognized as one of the most famous ski resorts in the country. It attracts a large international crowd every winter thanks to its World Cup slalom ski competitions, and is famous for its skiing and other winter sports. People from the area are often excellent skiers, as parents have their kids racing down the toughest runs as soon as they learn how to walk. Also, pets are very welcome at Kranjska Gora! There are plenty of smaller hotels and private accommodations in offer here, but if you still want to indulge in real hotel comfort with your family, friends and pets, Zlata Ladjica Boutique Hotel is located just an hour away.

Tips before you go on a trip

Don't forget to take your dog's passport, and also make sure that your pet is microchipped and fully vaccinated before you go. Don't forget to check where the nearest local vet is located, just in case. When you get to your destination, taking the dog skiing with you may not be the best idea. So, make sure you take it for a walk regularly before leaving it inside, or find a doggsiter. One more thing, pick up after your dog and check the resort's rules on dogs, as some may require dogs to be kept on their leads.
